A brief introduction to the Manto Negro grape.

The most iconic grape on the island; the Manto Negro
There was no other way we could start the new blog section than by introducing, perhaps, the most iconic grape on the island; the Manto Negro, one purely autoctonous from Mallorca.
Manto Negro is an exclusively native Mallorcan grape, and probably the most famous one. A few attempts have been made in other regions of Spain to grow this grape, all being unsuccesful. In this respect, Mallorca seems to have the exclusivity of growth and production due to its unique climate and the minerality and rocky soils on the island.
A dark skinned and large in size grape , this variety is used mainly in Binissalem DO. Manto Negro is also the most widely planted across the island and makes some of the smoothest reds- and (controversially) whites [yes, some white wines are made with red grapes, but this idea deserves its own blog entry ] – you could imagine. It produces wines that are light in color, smooth to the taste and best consumed young.
With summer season upon us, we want to present you a few personal favourite (light) reds and a rosé…because the idea of reds as a winter drink is too normative already.
Taste them, you might even end up tasting the whole bottle!
Montnegre
Varieties: Mantonegro, Shyraz, Cabernet and Merlot.
This red feels light in the mouth, with subtle yet restrained, persistent tannins. A perfect balance between a young yet aged red. Entirelly hand picked and ideally served slightly chilled accompanying some cheese and or sobrasada, salut!
Velo Negre
What a better opportunity to taste the purity of Mantonegro! Velo Negre is a medium body wine made with 100% Mantonegro grape. A red that looks very light to the eye, soft and smooth- you might even be able to taste fruit and chocolate in it.
Albaflor Rosado
Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Manto Negro, Merlot, Syrah
Raspberry coloured this rosé wine presents aromas of red fruits, citrus and pomegranate. Very refreshing and fruity, obviously perfect when served chilled.
Salut!
